ABOUT Joy Cassidy

I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist since 2006, in private practice and in a variety of organisations.

My therapy training is in Emotion Focused Therapy and ISTDP (Intensive Short Term Psychodynamic Therapy).

The therapy focuses on identifying how people have come to rely on strategies or defences, usually learned early in life to avoid painful feelings. These defences may have worked for a long time in our lives, but as adults, they can be negative, destructive and limiting.

Understanding how we have created these patterns of operating and changing them, can lead to better relationships with ourselves and others.

Reasons people seek therapy include relief from anxiety and depression, grief and loss, interpersonal relationships, assertiveness, work/life balance, relying on substances or problematic behaviours, impulse control.

Sessions are provided to individuals via tele-health (zoom).

Why have counselling?

  • Effective counselling provides a confidential environment and a skilled, impartial professional to help you understand what is going on in your life, why it is happening and how to make positive changes.

  • You can be assisted to understand patterns which have become unhelpful or destructive in your life or relationships.

  • Strategies are developed for managing the current situation, goals are established and insights into past influences may be explored.

Counselling and psychotherapy is a unique experience and I will work with you to understand the context of your situation and your various life influences.
